How Does Gamification Impact Corporate Learning?

In the never ending effort to motivate employees, most companies are taking cues from game-like elements in making jobs more fun. The most often cited reason companies try gamification is to improve employee motivation. Apparently, there are a lot of workers who need the extra boost. According to a 2013 Gallup poll, 70% of U.S. workers reported themselves as not being engaged in their jobs. Gamification is a powerful tool for corporate learning, it is an effective technique that can be used to engage learners.

Gamification is not about adding video games to your learning material, or adding scenarios to your learning objects. All of these are fun but they miss the core concept behind Gamification within a learning department. Implementing gamification in a working environment is always a win-win situation for the organization and the employee. Employee engagement is an increasingly important factor in workplace performance, and the use of gamification as a possible antecedent to increased employee engagement. The University of Pretoria (South Africa), 2016, Quantitative research via Internet questionnaires was done to determine employee engagement levels, and 211 responses were collected from employees of advertising agencies in South Africa. Statistical tests were done on the collected data to observe if employees from companies that use gamification had significantly higher levels of employee engagement than employees from companies that did not use gamification. Outcome: Employees from companies that use gamification were found to have significantly higher overall engagement levels, intellectual and effective engagement levels, and social engagement levels, as well as increased organizational citizenship behavior levels and reduced intent to turnover.  If you can help your employees enjoy what they do even a little bit then you should reap rewards.

Gamification is the process of adding motivational elements within a learning framework or system to increase user engagement based upon sound game theory and game mechanics.  It provides an effective informal learning environment and helps learners practice real-life situations and challenges in a safe environment. According to Wikipedia, “Gamification techniques strive to leverage people’s natural desires for socializing, learning, mastery, competition, achievement, status, self-expression, altruism, or closure.” To make learning more fun, implementation of rewards (badges and points) are necessary in a gamified workplace.  In an organization where gamification is implemented, rewarding an employee increases motivation and competition.

Gamification can be used to fulfill most learning needs including induction and on-boarding, product sales, customer support, soft skills, awareness creation, and compliance. Gamification-based learning have always appealed to the learner’s community, several companies have often been hesitant to embrace it on a wider scale, but not anymore! Based on the findings of a survey conducted by TalentLMS in 2016, 79% of the participants (both corporate learners and university students) said that they would be more productive and motivated if their learning environment was more like a game.

A vital benefit of gamifying business is that, it helps companies identify their future stars and leaders.
